Spook House (2012)

There are some places in this world that go far beyond any normal definition of “haunted.”  These places are so evil, so diabolical, that they become gateways to Hell itself.  The Fuller Farm is one such place.

It is said that old man Fuller conducted unspeakable acts, blood rituals and human sacrifices, all in an attempt to gain the ultimate knowledge, the ultimate power.  And then, he was killed–horribly murdered on his own lands, leaving the house to stand as a vacant monument to his wickedness.  But once a door is opened, it can never really be closed.

Now, the stars are right. The gateway is ready to once more unleash unspeakable horror upon the town of Harmony, Indiana. And this will be one Halloween that they will never forget!

“Michael West writes creepy, disturbing stuff with the attention to detail and a prose style that sings.” ~ Jackie Gamber, author of Redheart and Sela

“West does do a good job keeping things interesting… he writes some real page turners.  Think I will start keeping salt handy from now on.”  ~ Mermaid Heather

“5 Scared Stars! A cult classic! A book I will read EVERY HALLOWEEN! I loved it. It was scary and fun!” ~ Crossroads Reviews

“Anyone that loves the horror/thriller genre should read this book.  I admit that this is my first Michael West.  It will not be my last!” ~ The Bunny’s Review

“4 Stars!  Spook House is a spooky read which keeps you on the edge of your seat. It was really hard to set the book aside once I started reading. Micheal West makes sure you are sucked into the story and just doesn’t let go. The writing is smooth and gives the story that extra spooky atmosphere…It’s a perfect Halloween read and definitely not for the squeamish.”  ~ Bookishly Me

“5-Stars!  Michael West…is a true Horror writer. He builds immense suffocating suspense and terror in his book, Spook House…Although, what makes this an amazing read is the mystery and interpersonal relationships between the characters.  I have no doubt Spook House will be a hit with readers. It’s sure to have its following.” ~ Book & Movie Dimension

“5-Stars!  A haunted house in the tiny town of Harmony turns out to be less than harmonious (and) Halloween turns out to be a truly otherworldly experience.  The author does a great job with setting the scene and providing an appropriately frightening environment.  Cayden’s cheerful fanaticism accompanying his likeable façade was the most frightening aspect of the book…I’m not a fan of horror stories but I really liked this rendition.  I enjoyed the book.” ~ Azure Dwarf’s Horde of Science Fiction & Fantasy

“First off Michael is a great writer, one I have been following for a long time, and Spook House is another fine addition to his canon of work.  I am always on the look out for books that make an ideal read at Halloween, and Spook House has now found a permanent home in my must read books for Halloween.   This is a punchy, fast-paced story that layers on the thrills, chills, and scares in an almost perfect fashion.  Full of wonderfully creepy descriptive passages, that are only matched by some of the wonderfully creepy creatures that stalk the corridors of this excellent book.  This is a great addition to the Haunted House genre, and by the time you finish reading this you will be jumping at all the strange noises, and shadows that have somehow taken root in your home.  Dare you enter the Spook House, yes you should, but make sure you bring something to hide behind.”         ~ Ginger Nuts of Horror

“5-Stars!  Spook House is a refreshing dose of ‘small town’ horror at its best.  This is a story that brings to mind classics such as ‘Children of the Corn’ and Pet Sematary.  Michael West does a wonderful job of blending just enough lore and magic into his beasties to make them seem authentically otherworldly (and he) writes his cast with a spirit and humor that is very true to the Midwest.”  ~ WTF Are You Reading?

Spook House very neatly interweaves other West stories and plots. Fans of his will enjoy the crossovers and in-references, whilst these in no way detract from (what) can also be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel.  This is my third Michael West novel, and I have noticed one key thing: he is a consistently rewarding author with his own distinctive style and flourishes. The title may seem generic and by the numbers but the content within is anything but. This author can make the seemingly mundane scary and fantastical. I am eagerly anticipating the next effort!” ~ The Independent Review

“As much as I love reading a great horror novel, I love watching horror movies as well.  Now that I have young children, I don’t get to watch many (any!) horror flicks. Michael West’s Harmony, Indiana books are a great combination of both worlds.  The fun and the scares are much like watching a horror movie.  The Halloween tie-in was more subtle than I expected; you could definitely curl up with this one any time of the season.  If you haven’t read anything by Michael West, Spook House is a perfect place to start. His Harmony, Indiana books are stand alone and entertaining in any order you choose to read them. Although, after reading Spook House, you will likely have a strong desire to pick up The Wide Game next.” ~ Book Den

“Harmony, Indiana is to Michael West what Castle Rock, Maine is to Stephen King… This is another solid West thriller, gruesome, bloody, scary, and fun. The opening scene is right out of a classic horror flick, complete with a ‘don’t go in there!’ sentiment shared by the characters as well as the reader… Sheri and Robby are strong characters, vulnerable and damaged in their own way, but with a hidden strength  that drives the story forward… As for the climax, it’s absolutely brilliant. Once again, West manages to pull off a finale that’s more than worthy of the horrors leading up to it. If you’ve ever doubted that Super Soaker water guns, trucks full off road salt, bags of saline solution, and a cheesy Halloween haunted house set-up could be scary, then you need to give this a read – even if just to see how history comes full-circle, and how the victims become the heroes.” ~ Beauty In Ruins

“5 Stars!  I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Spook House, which is my first ever Michael West novel, had just the right amount of horror mixed in with an interesting storyline that kept me totally intrigued and turning the pages as quick as I could to the very end…so well written and didn’t have any of that immature or ‘cliche’ feel that I’ve noticed a lot of horror stories seem to have. It also had a plotline that didn’t seem to be so totally far out unbelievable, and there was even a scientific aspect within the story to back the events up, which I thought was a great touch. The two main characters, Sheri and Robby, were very realistic and likeable people and I really enjoyed the interactions between them and how they developed as the story moved along. This is not your typical horror story where multiple characters are being bumped off left, right and center for unexplained reasons. This story has a bit more depth and contains just the right amount of gore that fits well within the plotlines and doesn’t feel unnecessary as you continue reading. Overall, if you’re a fan of a good horror story that isn’t immature or predictable then I definitely recommend reading Spook House. I can’t wait to try some other Michael West novels now!” ~ Beagle Book Space

“Woohoo!!! It spooks you literally from the first moment and keeps you at the edge of your seat the whole time. It’s creepy, violent (monster violence that is), excited and full of mystery. It’s exactly what that kind of stories need, written or live action, and as a result you have a really great read at your hands…gave me the chills and made me (want to) try more of the both the genre and the author.”  ~ Splash of Our Worlds

“4-Stars!  The very first thing that must be mentioned is that, while this is the third book in the series, you do not need to read the first two books in the series to understand and enjoy this… a truly imaginative novel that was interesting, intriguing and page-turning…wonderfully written and enthralling…It’s not long before you feel that you cannot put the book down and simply have to get to the end to know how it ends…There were many things to love about this book; the plot, the monsters, the tension, the writing style, and the characters…It is one story that I am incredibly glad to have read and I will now be making sure I go and read the first two stories in this series, just so that I can read more of the characters and of Michael West’s writing style. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys fantasy, horror, and mystery all rolled into one. It is a captivating and intense read and it is definitely not for the easily scared or the light-hearted. So if you’re in the mood for something that may have the power to keep you up at night, this is the book you should read.” ~ A Daydreamer’s Thoughts

“5 Stars!  Michael West is of one of my favorite all time writers. His writing is smart, his stories are intense and captivating. He is one of the rare ones that I can honestly say I have loved everything he has written.  I started reading this book and I literally could not put it down… awesome, fun, scary, clever. This is a book that will not disappoint.” ~ Bee’s Knees Reviews

“Beautifully timed with moments of peace and mystery interspersed among gruesome horror, nicely rounded with backstories so sparingly told they add depth without increasing length, and hauntingly evocative with gorgeous scenery behind the gathering gloom, Spook House lends a whole new dimension to the idea of a haunted house, and will keep both new readers and long-time fans glued to the pages.  Or stuck to them with curious slime perhaps…A writer to watch, a novel to enjoy, and a place to avoid on the map: Spook House, Harmony, Indiana, USA.” ~ Sheila Deeth, World Literary Cafe

“I do love reading a well written horror novel, especially when the characters are ones that are extremely likable who you want to see survive the ordeal. And that is just what I got with Michael West’s Spook House…a creepy good read.” ~ The Haunting of Orchid Forsythia

“West writes a damn fine story. The characters are well-developed and the story is rich and intelligent. Where you find monsters you will also find gory deaths, but it isn’t done in a gratuitous manner. The story has a few lulls between the fast paced action scenes, but overall this is a quick read and good time for any fan of horror. If you like Stephen King or Scott Nicholson, then you will enjoy this.” ~ I Smell Sheep

“4-Stars!  Michael West is a very good writer.  Spook House reads just like a horror movie, but not in the corny, cheesy predictable way.  It has plenty of gore, plenty of suspense, plenty of monsters, plenty of action…but what it also has is heart.  If you’re a fan of the horror genre, then do yourself a HUGE favor and pick up a copy of Spook House, because I know you’ll absolutely love it!”  ~ John Allen, Write Mind

“What a fabulous find! Spook House by Michael West is one of those Horror books that just grabs you from the very first page with characters you really want to get to know–and some you never want to have the bad luck to run into, that’s for sure!  This is a super scary, and sometimes delightfully gross, horror tale…Oh, and the illustrations…WOW! What an unexpected touch to find in this book!  That spider-dog was one of the sickest things I’ve seen; it was so great! Where do authors come up with this stuff?  I wonder sometimes just how terrifying their nightmares are if they think up this stuff while they are awake.  The town, the characters, the creatures, and the back story in Spook House are all so wonderfully crafted I swear I have just been on a great adventure and I wish it wasn’t over.” ~ eReaderPerks.com

“Spook House reached a G-force of speed that took me right back to that white-knuckled runaway train in the (Six Flags) park of my youth…The action was so fast paced that I felt like my hair was going to fly back from my e-book (similar to the old Memorex commercial with the stereo speakers) and that if I didn’t hold tightly to the arms of my chair, I would be flung off.  By the time I’d reached the story’s climax, I felt almost as weak and wobbly as I did all those years ago at the end of that runaway mine train ride.  A full 5 star book that I’d give a 6th star to just for the neck and neck race between good and evil.  Brilliant.” ~ MikesFilmTalk

“Spook House gets four tombstones for its familiar landmarks: urban legends, Old Ones, obsessive Celts and the wise old man who turns the hunter into the hunted, a la Captain Quint. These tried-and-true horror elements are tied together with unrelenting action and flowing exposition. Realistic dialogue is a common problem in horror fiction, but West makes his characters’ speech believable, relying on neither strings of curse words nor hokey expressions. While Spook House is certainly a stand-alone story, I will definitely check out West’s Wide Game; I desperately need to know what happened in the corn.” ~ Bitten by Books

“(Michael West writes with) butter-smooth prose and a razor-keen sense of how to draw out suspense. I found a story that pulled me along the shoot like a greased up pig and plenty of greasy-grimy people guts decorating the scenery. I even found myself caring about the main characters a bit and was quite impressed at how whole and solid he makes this little slice of Indiana feel. I haven’t gotten this strong of a sense of the personality of place in a while. Most importantly, I had fun. That’s all that matters here.” ~Pustule Oozings

“From the beginning there’s a scene that gave me the willies. Guess I’ve seen too many horror movies, but that spider dog. Oh, man. From that scene on I was prepared for things to get crazier. That’s what the author does so well. Uses his talent for writing to set your nerves on edge and strings you along until, finally, he releases you with an ending like no other.” ~Amazon.com
